The workshop in brief:
The Nutrition and Dietetics Department, in collaboration with the Medical Technical Radiology Department, organized a World Cancer Day workshop titled “Shield Your Cells: Food as Prevention”, focusing on the vital role of nutrition in cancer prevention. Our department emphasized how antioxidant-rich foods, fiber, and essential nutrients protect cells and reduce cancer risk. Through expert discussions, we highlighted whole foods and lifestyle choices as key preventive strategies, reinforcing that prevention starts with nutrition.

Participants: 100 Participants (TIU Staff, Dean, Head of departments, lecturers, research assistants and physiotherapy students) also all other relevant departmental students and staff in the TIU university).

1. The Role of Early Detection and Lifestyle in Cancer Prevention – Dr. Rewan Hussein Hasan, General Surgeon from HMU, emphasized the significance of early diagnosis, lifestyle modifications, and dietary choices in lowering cancer risks.

2. Cellular Mutations, Environmental Factors, and Nutrition in Cancer Development – Prof. Dr. Jalal Ali Jalal, Pathologist from HMU, explained how genetic changes, environmental exposures, and dietary habits contribute to cancer progression.

3. Nutrition as a Shield: Anti-Cancer Foods and Immunity – Prof. Dr. Sherzad Ali, expert Nutritionist from HMU, provided practical dietary guidelines, highlighting the role of anti-cancer foods in strengthening the immune system and reducing cancer risks.

• The discussions highlighted the importance of early detection and lifestyle modifications, reinforcing that a combination of healthy habits and regular screenings plays a key role in prevention.
• Attendees also explored how genetic mutations, environmental exposures, and poor nutrition contribute to cancer development, deepening their understanding of risk factors.
• The session encouraged healthier eating habits, inspiring participants to adopt balanced meal plans and mindful eating practices.
• Lastly, the collaboration between the Nutrition and Dietetics Department and the Medical Radiology Department demonstrated a holistic approach to cancer awareness, integrating the power of nutrition, early detection, and lifestyle education.
