The workshop in brief:

Civil Engineering department at Tishk International University (TIU) organized a workshop on introducing the funds opportunities of DAAD and how to make preparation for available funds. This national workshop aims to announce the fund availability of DAAD in Iraq for graduates, PhD candidates and researchers and higher education cooperation. And introducing the road-map and procedures for successful application to DAAD funding grants of joint international collaborative project, based on experiences from previous project fund applications

Participants: It was attended by 36 persons including head of departments, professors and assistants of TIU and other universities like EPU and Raparin University. The audience has been informed about how to get in touch with the latest call for funds and scholarships which are provided by DAAD. And a thorough explanations were conducted in preparing the project for funds.

  2. 2nd session: Securing Grant for your project.

Presenters names and affiliations:

  • The first session was presented by Jwan Khalis (DAAD coordinator for Iraq) and the second session was presented by PhD. Candidate Peshawa Luqman in Bahus University Wiemer (BUH).
Outcome of the workshop:

Civil Engineering Department at Tishk International University (TIU) jointly with the chair of Advanced Structures at Bauhaus University Weimar have received a grant of 181,064.00 Euros from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), within the framework of the “University partnerships with Iraq 2022-2023” program under the project title “Multiscale consequence studies for hazard impact on structures in Iraq“.

The partnership between Bauhaus University Weimar (BUW) and Tishk International University Erbil (TIU) aims to further develop the curriculum of the higher education institute in Iraq, to conduct joint scientific research and field surveys to offer young academics in Iraq (M.Sc. and PhD students) additional qualifications.

The project will focus on analyzing the effects of natural hazards and their severity and identify areas with the highest risk with respect to each hazard using different scales of assessment. The project will also contribute to the development of a robust solution to reform design concepts/construction

practices, introduce/apply efficient mitigation measures, and ultimately improve the social and economic condition of Iraq. The project on one hand will focus on survey and elaboration of building stock data through techniques of building stock tagging which helps to identify the typical building types and their vulnerability, and on the other hand, study the characteristics of damaged buildings in the city of Mosul and to define economic reconstruction measures. Moreover, the partnership aims at developing a framework for good engineering practices with respect to natural hazards, and to train current academic staff and Ph.D. students at higher education’s institutes of the Partner University and future engineers with the state-of-the-art methods in assessment of earthquake, flood, wind, and climate change risks in structural engineering.

Project start: 01.01.2022

Duration: 24-month
