Small Businesses in Kurdistan: Opportunities and Challenges

The workshop in brief: In collaboration with Komar University, the Business and Management Department of TIU Sulaymaniyah has organized a National Workshop on 15 December 2021 at Komar University Campus. The speakers of the workshop were; Dr. Ahmet (TIU) in the field of operations/marketing, Dr. Taylan (TIU) in the field of leadership, Dr. Mustafa (KUST) in the field of e-banking, and Dr. Dlawar (KUST) in the field of finance & accounting. The workshop aimed at discussing the opportunities and challenges for the Small businesses in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The discussions have been moderated by Mr. Pakzad (KUST). The students of the Business and Management of both universities and the Lecturers of the Komar university have participated in the workshop. The topics below were discussed:

1. New Developments for Small Businesses
2. Opportunities and Challenges in terms of Finance, Banking, Leadership, and Operations Management

Participants: More than 40 participants (Lecturers, research assistants, students from business department of TIU and KUST).

Outcome of the workshop:

Following points have been mentioned and explained in detail;

Starting and growing a small business can be extremely challenging. As a business owner, you have to overcome multiple roadblocks to succeed. Money management, fatigue, hiring the right employees, balancing quality and growth, are just a few of the many things that could make your business standstill if you fail to make the right decisions. The speakers elaborated comprehensively on the challenges and opportunities from different lenses or angles from a small business context.
